Paris Saint-Germain has an awe-inspiring team on the field every week. With men like Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, Mauro Icardi and Ángel Di Maria, it is sometimes difficult for Mauricio Pochettino to choose. These top players have, of course, not been brought to Paris for nothing. With a real star team, PSG is trying to finally win that Champions League title. Still, the club must be careful. With all those great football stars, there is no place in the base for the younger talents. As a result, many top skills have recently left the Parc des Princes. Soumaila Coulibaly is the newest name on the outgoing list. The central defender will start working for Borussia Dortmund from next season. Moreover, there is no guarantee that the current star team will win the league title this season. PSG is currently in second place in the competition, three points behind Lille. So there is work to be done for Pochettino and the rest of Paris Saint-Germain.
Big money rules at Paris Saint-Germain
Last season, Paris Saint-Germain reached the Champions League final for the first time. That dream of the Arab owners could finally come true. PSG only needed one win to become the best in Europe. But even though the club has pumped hundreds of millions into the arrival of star players such as Neymar and Mbappé, that CL title is still not in. In last year’s final, Bayern Munich was 1-0 too strong. That loss was the beginning of the end for then trainer Thomas Tuchel. A bad start in the 2020/21 competition, partly due to the many absent star players with corona, did not help Tuchel. The German had to leave the field at the end of 2020 after “a thorough analysis of the sporting performances”, as the club itself described.
The CL draw provides a re-release of the 2020 final
The disappointment about last year’s lost Champions League final can still be felt in Paris. High time for revenge! And the PSG does indeed get that chance. Now that the Champions League has reached the quarter-finals, Saint-Germain can prepare for two great duels. The draw on Friday 19 March resulted in an absolute hit for PSG. The club is linked to the team that kept them from the CL title last year: Bayern Munich. So there will be an actual re-release of the Champions League final of 2020.
Bayern is undoubtedly not the only team that can bother Paris Saint-Germain this year. Among others, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Real Madrid are still in the race for the title. Yet PSG needs to get rid of Bayern first. This must be done on April 6/7 and April 13/14. Until then, Pochettino can entirely focus on the competition. That is also badly needed.
It is also exciting for PSG in the Ligue 1
Winning the Champions League is everything for Paris Saint-Germain (and Qatar Sports Investments in particular). But the national competition should not be forgotten. PSG is the club to beat on its own soil with seven league titles in the past eight seasons. In the unfinished 2019/20 competition, the Parisian club was no less than 12 points ahead of the number two, even with one game less played. The gap with the match was also prominent in the two seasons before. At the moment, Saint-Germain players and supporters can only dream of such a big lead. The team has to make up a few points at Lille before the end of the season.
